What 'free' actually means
A grant is free in one exact sense: you do not repay it. It is not free in three other senses. Most Ontario grants are cost-shares, so a '50% up to $50,000' program means you fund the other half. Nearly all require approval before you spend. If you start the work before you are approved, the program will usually not pay. And most reimburse after receipts, so you carry the cost first.
Where the non-repayable money is in Ontario
- Technology: the Technology Demonstration Program covers 50% up to $50,000 for implementing a digital plan; the Retail Modernization Project Grant covers 50% up to $5,000 for store tech.
- Storefronts: city programs across Ontario pay for facades and signage, topped by Ottawa's heritage program at 75% up to $75,000.
- Energy: the Retrofit Program covers up to 50% of eligible energy-saving projects.

'Free grant' offers to avoid
- Anything you must pay to see: 'funding reports', member-only databases, application fees to find out if you qualify. Every real program's rules are public and free.
- Promises of approval. Program administrators decide; nobody else can promise an outcome.
- Nameless programs. 'You qualify for a free government grant' with no program name and no official page is a warning sign, not funding.
- Deadline pressure without a deadline. Real intakes have dates. Each program on our list shows its confirmed date, or says there is none.
