Type 'five thousand dollar government grant' into Google and you will find ads, paywalled 'funding databases' and confident lists of programs that do not exist. Here is the true version, from a list where every program comes from its own government paurce.
First, the honest answer
No federal program hands small businesses a flat $5,000. The grants that DO live at this size are provincial and municipal, they fund specific things (store technology, storefronts, first-year advice), and nearly all are cost-shares that require approval first. That is not fine print — it is the difference between getting the money and losing it.

How these actually pay
- Most are 50% cost-shares: a $5,000 grant means a $10,000 project where you fund half.
- Approval usually comes BEFORE you spend; starting early is the classic way owners lose the money.
- City programs are address-specific — designated downtown streets and improvement areas decide who qualifies.
- Reimbursement follows receipts on most of them. Budget for the wait.
If someone offers you 'the $5,000 government grant'
- A real program has a name and an official government page. No name, no page, walk away.
- You never pay to find out whether you qualify.
- Approval is the administrator's decision alone; anyone promising it is not telling the truth.
- Grants for work you already finished are rare and specific; 'claim money for past projects' pitches are bait.
Need more than $5,000?
The same registry tracks much bigger money: Ontario's Technology Demonstration Program covers 50% up to $50,000, and our ranked list of 20 Ontario small business grants goes up to $75,000. For every province, the full funding list shows what is open right now with the verified date on every record.
BBN Labs screens your business for these programs free, and when one fits, we build the store technology, website or signage the money is meant for — and help you manage the application and deadlines so you do not lose it. Approval always rests with each program administrator, subject to program rules, available funding, and approval.
