Heritage Conservation Loan and Grant Programs
Stratford has offered heritage building loans of up to $50,000 for building code improvements and up to $25,000 for facade work. The program is currently suspended while the city reviews it, so watch for news from the city before you make plans. Applications are closed right now and we watch for reopening.
“Through a 5-year trial program, the City of Stratford had previously offered an interest-free façade improvement loan ($25,000), a building code upgrade loan ($50,000), and a grant program for property improvements within the Heritage Conservation District.”

Before you spend any money
The program is closed now. If it reopens, get the city's approval BEFORE you start work or buy anything.

Is this for you?
- You run a business in a heritage-designated building in Stratford
- You are planning exterior facade, storefront, or signage improvements
- You can secure approval before starting any work
Probably not the right fit if
- Your building is not heritage-designated
- You are looking for a grant that does not need to be repaid
How much you'd realistically get
Up to $50,000 building-code-improvement loan; up to $25,000 interest-free facade loan (program currently suspended/under review)
What may be supported
- Facade improvements
- Improvements to meet building code
- General heritage property improvements
How applying works
Effort: mediumIf the program reopens, expect a city application with quotes and photos, and approval before you start.
- 01Confirm the program has reopened, your property is in the Heritage Conservation District, and funds are available
- 02Get the city's written pre-approval BEFORE starting
- 03Complete the approved work
- 04Submit your costs to receive the loan funds
Documents commonly required
- Quotes/estimates for the work
- Photos of the current storefront
- Proof of property ownership or owner's consent
What to know before you count on it
- These are loans that you must repay. The facade loan was interest-free; ask the city about the terms of the building code loan.
- If the program reopens, apply and get approved BEFORE you start any work or buy anything.
- Only properties in Stratford's Heritage Conservation District qualify. Confirm your address qualifies before you spend.
- The program was a 5-year trial and is now under review.
- If it reopens, confirm money is available before you plan.
What are your odds?
The program is closed and under review, so you cannot apply now. If it reopens, your property must be in the Heritage Conservation District and you will need approval before any work starts.
